Seal of Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince – Wax Seal Stamp
This wax seal stamp is based on the seal of Edward of Woodstock (1330–1376), Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Aquitaine — remembered by history as the Black Prince. Eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, Edward was a celebrated military commander and one of the most famous knights of the 14th century.
The seal depicts the prince in full armour upon a caparisoned horse, wielding a sword and bearing the royal arms of England differenced by a label of three points argent (a heraldic mark of cadency denoting the eldest son). Around the edge is the Latin legend: "EDVARDI PRIMOGENIGI REGIS ANGLI PR[IN]CIPIS AQVITANNIE ET WALLIE DVC IS CORNVBIE ET COMITIS CESTRIES" (Edward, heir to the king of England, prince of Aquitane and Wales, duke of Cornwall and earl of Chester), attesting to his lofty titles and roles in English and French affairs.
Edward gained fame for his leadership during the Hundred Years' War, notably at the Battle of Crécy (1346) and the Battle of Poitiers (1356), where he captured the French king, Jean II. His conduct earned him admiration from friend and foe alike, though also later criticism for harsh campaigns in Aquitaine. The origin of the nickname “Black Prince” is uncertain—it may derive from his dark armour or fearsome reputation.
This seal is a faithful homage to one of England’s most iconic medieval figures. Ideal for historians, medievalists, re-enactors, and lovers of chivalric history, it brings a tangible sense of the 14th century to your correspondence and craft.
⚔️ “We shall not go home until we have fought with the French.” – attributed to the Black Prince before Poitiers, 1356.
