Great Seal of Edward I – Wax Seal Stamp
This wax seal stamp is based on the Great Seal of the Realm used by King Edward I of England (1239–1307), also known as Edward Longshanks and Edwardus Primus in Latin. A formidable medieval monarch and military commander, Edward was the son of Henry III and ruled England from 1272 to 1307. He is best known for his conquest of Wales, conflicts with Scotland, and legal reforms that shaped English governance for centuries.
The seal depicts Edward I mounted in full mail and surcoat, bearing a raised sword in one hand and a shield emblazoned with the royal arms in the other. It symbolised royal authority, military strength, and the sovereign’s divine right to rule. The legend on the original reads:
“EDWARDUS DEI GRACIA REX ANGLIE DOMINUS HIBERNIE DUX AQUITANIE”
— Edward, by the Grace of God, King of England, Lord [shortened] of Ireland, Duke of Aquitaine.
Edward’s reign was marked by decisive campaigns in Wales—culminating in the construction of mighty castles and the incorporation of the Welsh principality into the English crown—and by his wars against Scotland, including the campaigns against William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Known for his towering stature and stern demeanour, he earned the nickname "Hammer of the Scots" (Malleus Scotorum), a title later inscribed on his tomb.
This historically inspired wax seal is perfect for reenactors, medieval enthusiasts, history scholars, and those with a passion for the Plantagenet era. It captures the dignity and power of one of England’s most commanding kings.
🛡️ “A man does good business when he rids himself of a turd.” — Edward I, on the execution of William Wallace, c.1305.
