This wax seal stamp is based on the equestrian side of the Great Seal of King Henry VIII of England (1491–1547). A monarch of the House of Tudor, Henry reigned from 1509 to 1547 and is one of the most consequential figures of the early modern period, presiding over profound political and religious transformation in England.
The equestrian side of Henry’s Great Seal depicts the king mounted on horseback in armour, sword in hand, in the tradition of earlier medieval kings. The composition presents the monarch as a warrior and defender of the realm, complementing the enthroned side of the seal, which shows him as lawgiver and head of state.
The Great Seal was central to royal administration, used to authenticate official documents such as proclamations, charters, and legal instruments. Its application signified direct royal approval, making it one of the most important instruments of governance in Tudor England.
Henry VIII’s reign is defined by the English Reformation, initiated through his separation from the Roman Catholic Church and the establishment of the monarch as Supreme Head of the Church of England. This transformation reshaped the religious and political structure of the realm and had lasting consequences for English society and governance.
