Great Seal of France 1848 Wax Seal Stamp – Second French Republic Liberty Brass Seal
Wax seal stamp based on the historic Great Seal of France, adopted during the Second French Republic in 1848.
At the centre of the seal is the personification of Liberty, shown wearing a distinctive crown of seven arches. She holds a traditional civic emblem and rests beside a ship’s tiller decorated with the Gallic rooster, a long-standing symbol associated with Gaul and the French nation.
At Liberty’s feet is a vase marked “SU”, representing Suffrage Universel — Universal Suffrage. Around her are further symbols representing different elements of French society and culture, including the arts, architecture, education, agriculture and industry.
The composition is surrounded by the inscription:
“RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, DÉMOCRATIQUE, UNE ET INDIVISIBLE”
— “French Republic, democratic, one and indivisible” —
together with the date 24 February 1848, marking the establishment of the Second French Republic.
The reverse of the original Great Seal bears the inscription “AU NOM DU PEUPLE FRANÇAIS” — “In the name of the French people” — along with oak and laurel leaves, wheat, grapes and the national motto Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.
The design reflects the strong use of classical allegory and civic symbolism in 19th-century French state imagery, combining ideas of liberty, democracy, education, agriculture, industry and national identity into a single elaborate emblem.
Each stamp is made of solid brass, supplied with a handle, and presented in a velvet pouch.
