This wax seal stamp is based on the enthroned, or “majestic,” side of the Great Seal of King Henry VIII of England (1491–1547). A monarch of the House of Tudor, Henry reigned from 1509 to 1547 and is one of the most consequential figures of the early modern period, presiding over profound political and religious transformation in England.
The enthroned side of Henry’s Great Seal depicts the king seated in full regalia, crowned and holding the sceptre and orb, traditional symbols of royal authority and governance. The composition follows the established medieval convention of representing the ruler as a divinely sanctioned sovereign, emphasising continuity with earlier kings while also reflecting the increasing grandeur of Tudor kingship. This imagery projects not martial authority, but the king’s role as supreme governor, lawgiver, and head of state.
The surrounding legend on the seal reflects Henry’s royal style, which evolved during his reign, particularly following his break with Rome. Later versions of his titulature emphasise his authority over the Church of England, reinforcing the union of secular and ecclesiastical power under the crown.
The Great Seal was central to royal administration, used to authenticate official documents such as proclamations, charters, and legal instruments. Its application signified direct royal approval, making it one of the most important instruments of governance in Tudor England. Henry VIII’s Great Seals were in use throughout his reign, from 1509 to 1547.
Henry VIII’s reign is defined by the English Reformation, initiated through his separation from the Roman Catholic Church and the establishment of the monarch as Supreme Head of the Church of England. This transformation reshaped the religious and political structure of the realm and had lasting consequences for English society and governance.
