Fleur-de-Lis, French Heraldic Emblem - Medieval Period - Historical Wax Seal Stamp

Wax seal stamp featuring the classic fleur-de-lis, one of the most enduring symbols in European heraldry.

The fleur-de-lis is a stylised floral emblem most closely associated with medieval France. Although forms of the motif are considerably older, it became firmly connected with the French monarchy during the 12th century and subsequently appeared extensively on seals, shields, manuscripts, architecture and ceremonial objects.

Early French rulers including Louis VII helped establish the fleur-de-lis as a royal emblem, while a clearly heraldic form appears on surviving seals from the early 13th century. The traditional arms of France originally displayed numerous golden fleurs-de-lis across a blue field, a design often known as France Ancient.

During the reign of Charles V in the late 14th century, the design was simplified to three golden fleurs-de-lis. This arrangement became one of the most recognisable heraldic compositions associated with historic France and was widely imitated elsewhere in European heraldry.

Over time, the fleur-de-lis developed meanings connected with heritage, lineage, dignity and traditional heraldic identity. Its symmetrical form also made it a particularly effective motif for seals, decorative metalwork and architectural ornament.

Each stamp is made of solid brass, fitted with a wooden handle and presented in a velvet pouch.
