The Galactic Republic was an ancient democratic civilisation governed through the Galactic Senate and traditionally protected by the Jedi Order. Long before the Clone Wars, Darth Vader or the rise of the Galactic Empire, the Republic had already survived centuries of conflict with Sith powers and other enemies seeking control of the galaxy.
This distant period forms the setting of some of the most celebrated Star Wars stories outside the original films. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place approximately 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire, during a devastating conflict in which the Republic and Jedi face Sith forces led by figures including Darth Revan and Darth Malak.
Star Wars: The Old Republic explores a later period, more than 3,000 years before the classic films, when the galaxy is again divided by war between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. Jedi, Sith, soldiers and other factions compete for the future of a Republic whose history stretches back thousands of years.
The Republic emblem associated with this era has consequently become closely linked with the KOTOR and SWTOR Old Republic aesthetic, representing the Republic and its Jedi allies during one of the most turbulent periods of Star Wars history.
