Great Seal of Edward III – Wax Seal Stamp

This wax seal stamp is based on the Great Seal of the Realm used by King Edward III of England (1312–1377), one of the most influential and celebrated monarchs of the medieval era. Known in Latin as Edwardus Tertius and in French as Édouard III, he reigned from 1327 until his death in 1377 and was the grandson of Edward I and son of Edward II and Isabella of France.

Edward III is remembered for restoring royal authority after the troubled reign of his father, and for initiating the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) by pressing his claim to the French crown—becoming the first English monarch to quarter the Royal Arms of England with those of France. His rule marked a golden age of English chivalry and saw the founding of the Order of the Garter, the most prestigious order of knighthood in England.

The seal itself features Edward III as an armoured knight on horseback, carrying a shield and sword—symbolising his status as both sovereign and military commander. The inscription on his great seal reads:
“EDWARDUS DEI GRACIA REX ANGLIE ET FRANCIE DOMINUS HIBERNIE”
— Edward, by the Grace of God, King of England and France, Lord of Ireland.

This wax seal pays tribute to a king who led England through one of its most legendary military eras, commanding famous victories at Crécy and Poitiers, and overseeing a court culture steeped in chivalric ideals. Edward III’s long and impactful reign shaped the identity of the English monarchy for generations to come.

🦁 “Honi soit qui mal y pense” – Shame on him who thinks evil of it.
(Motto of the Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III, 1348)
