Staten-Generaal Wax Seal Stamp – Seal of the Dutch Republic (1579)

This wax seal stamp is based on the official seal of the Staten-Generaal, or States General, of the Netherlands, created in 1579 at the time of the Union of Utrecht—a pivotal moment that marked the formal beginning of Dutch independence from Spanish rule. The Union brought together the rebellious northern provinces of the Low Countries in opposition to the Spanish Habsburg monarchy, laying the foundation for what would become the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. As the Eighty Years’ War (1568–1648) against Spanish domination raged on, the creation of a distinct state seal served not only a legal purpose but was also a powerful visual declaration of sovereign identity.

At the heart of the seal is the Leo Belgicus, a crowned lion rampant, which had long served as a symbol of the Low Countries. In one claw, the lion grips a drawn sword, representing armed resistance and the willingness of the provinces to defend their liberties. In the other, it holds a bundle of arrows crossed in saltire—each arrow representing one of the united provinces. These arrows are bound together by a banner bearing the Latin word CONCORDIA, meaning “harmony” or “unity.” This image was deliberately chosen to reflect the message that only through unity could the small provinces stand strong against a vast empire. It echoes the founding motto of the Republic: “Concordia res parvae crescunt”, or “Through unity, small things grow.”

Surrounding the central emblem is the Latin legend SIGILLVM ORDINVM BELGII, which translates to “Seal of the Estates of the Netherlands.” This inscription affirmed the legitimacy and authority of the governing body that had broken away from Spanish overlordship. By adopting this seal, the Staten-Generaal declared not just independence, but a new political order based on collective sovereignty, resistance to tyranny, and shared identity.

This wax seal is perfect for history enthusiasts, collectors, or anyone with an interest in the Dutch Revolt, heraldry, and early republican iconography. It embodies the defiant spirit of a people who forged their own path through war, diplomacy, and unity.
