This wax seal stamp is based on the national coat of arms of Romania, a heraldic composition that reflects the historical regions and political development of the Romanian state. The modern form of the arms was adopted in 1992, drawing on earlier designs used prior to the communist period and rooted in heraldic traditions established in the 19th century.
At the centre is a golden eagle displayed on a blue field, holding a cross in its beak, a sword in one talon, and a sceptre in the other. The eagle, long associated with Wallachia, symbolises sovereignty, authority, and the continuity of the state. The cross reflects the historical role of Eastern Orthodoxy in Romanian identity.
On the eagle’s chest is a shield divided into fields representing the principal historical regions of Romania. These include Wallachia (the eagle), Moldavia (an aurochs head), Transylvania (a combination of eagle and towers), Banat and Oltenia (a lion with a sword crossing a bridge), and Dobruja (two dolphins). Each element derives from earlier regional heraldry and reflects the gradual unification of these territories during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The coat of arms in its current form was reinstated after the fall of the communist regime, replacing the socialist emblem introduced in 1948. Its design reflects a return to traditional heraldic symbolism and the historical foundations of the Romanian state.
Heraldic devices such as this have long been used to represent authority, identity, and continuity. While not a seal in the strict medieval sense, the coat of arms functions in a similar capacity on official documents and state insignia, serving as a visual expression of national sovereignty.
