frederick-iii-imperial-eagle-seal-14330
Frederick III - Imperial Eagle Seal - 1452 - Historical Wax Seal Stamp

Frederick III, Imperial Eagle Seal - 1452 - Historical Wax Seal Stamp

Wax seal stamp based on the Adlersiegel, or Eagle Seal, of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, featuring the great double-headed eagle surrounded by the territorial arms of the Habsburg ruler.

Frederick was born in 1415 and elected King of the Romans in 1440. In 1452 he travelled to Rome, where he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Nicholas V. He was the last emperor to receive the traditional imperial coronation in Rome and went on to rule until 1493, making his reign one of the longest in the history of the Holy Roman Empire.

Frederick’s imperial seal developed from the double-sided royal seal he had used before his coronation. The principal face showed the ruler enthroned beneath an elaborate Gothic canopy, while the reverse was dominated by the imperial eagle surrounded by an elaborate arrangement of heraldic shields.

After Frederick became emperor, the single-headed eagle of his earlier royal seal was altered into the double-headed imperial eagle. The double-headed form had become increasingly associated with imperial authority during the 15th century and would remain one of the defining symbols of the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburg rulers for centuries.

Around the eagle are the arms representing Frederick’s hereditary territories and dynastic possessions, creating an elaborate example of late-medieval Habsburg heraldry.

Frederick’s famous personal device A.E.I.O.U. also appears prominently above the eagle. He began using these five letters as early as 1437 and placed them on buildings, manuscripts, objects and official imagery throughout his life. Their precise meaning remains debated, although they became inseparably associated with Frederick and subsequently with the House of Habsburg.

The eagle face also carries an unusual Latin verse rather than the conventional list of royal titles. The inscription had earlier appeared around the imperial eagle of Emperor Sigismund and was retained by Frederick, connecting the imperial eagle with biblical and medieval imagery associated with Ezekiel and the soaring eagle.

A later engraved representation of Frederick’s Majesty Seal and Eagle Seal was published by Anton Weck in his 1680 history of Dresden. The date 1680 therefore refers to this later illustration, not to the creation of Frederick’s original 15th-century seal.

Seal Legend:

AQUILA EZECHIELIS SPONSE MISSA EST DE CELIS VOLAT IPSA SINE META QUO NEC VATES NEC PROPHETA EVOLAVIT ALTIUS

Translation:

“The eagle of Ezekiel, sent from heaven to the bride, flies without limit, where neither seer nor prophet has ever flown higher.”

Above the eagle appears Frederick’s personal device:

A.E.I.O.U.

Design: Imperial Eagle Seal of Frederick III
Person: Frederick III
Dynasty: House of Habsburg
Date: 1452
Period: 15th-century Central Europe
Symbol: Imperial double-headed eagle
Personal Device: A.E.I.O.U.
Style: Late Medieval Habsburg heraldry
Stamp Size: 50 mm
Material: Solid brass
Type: Wax seal stamp / sealing stamp

Each stamp is made of solid brass, supplied with a handle, and presented in a velvet pouch.

Suitable for letters, envelopes, historical collections, medieval displays, heraldry collections, genealogy projects, traditional stationery and decorative sealing.

“Whatever ... bears AEIOU ... is mine.” — Frederick III
