Known in Latin as Sanctus Eduardus Confessor and in Old English as Ēadweard Andettere, Edward ruled from 1042 until 1066, shortly before the Norman Conquest reshaped England’s history.

Edward became renowned not for military achievement, but for his reputation for piety, justice, and measured kingship. In 1161, he was canonised by Pope Alexander III, and came to be remembered as England’s royal saint. The title Confessor refers to a ruler noted for a devout and exemplary life rather than martyrdom.

His reign is often associated with a period of relative stability and ecclesiastical development. Most notably, Edward commissioned the construction of the original Westminster Abbey, which became both his burial place and a lasting symbol of English monarchy. The abbey would later serve as the coronation church for English kings and queens.

This seal reflects the concept of sacred kingship in late Anglo-Saxon England.
